Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr. Philip Mpango, has announced his retirement from public service after a distinguished career spanning over four decades in government and academia. The announcement was made during the 20th anniversary celebrations of Ruaha Catholic University (RUCU) in Iringa, where Dr. Mpango expressed his intention to return to his agricultural roots in honor of his late father’s legacy.
Dr. Mpango’s decision to retire is deeply personal. “I have decided to retire from public service and go back to farming, which was my father’s lifelong occupation,” he said, emphasizing his desire to reconnect with the land and continue his father’s work. He views this transition as coming full circle after decades of dedicated service to the nation. His remarks were warmly received by students, staff, and clergy present at the event, who praised his integrity, leadership, and commitment to Tanzania’s development.
In addition to honoring his family heritage, Dr. Mpango’s retirement is motivated by a strong belief in empowering Tanzania’s youth. With over 75% of the country’s population under the age of 30, he stressed the importance of allowing young people to take up leadership roles and contribute to the nation’s future. “We have been nurtured and we have served; now it is the turn of the youth,” he remarked, encouraging them to actively participate in shaping Tanzania’s destiny.
His announcement comes at a critical political juncture, with Tanzania preparing for general elections scheduled for October 2025. Dr. Mpango urged citizens, particularly the youth, to engage in the democratic process and vote wisely to ensure peace and stability. “Let us vote for visionary and capable leaders who will manage our resources for the benefit of future generations,” he appealed.
Dr. Mpango’s career has been marked by significant achievements, including his tenure as Vice President since March 2021, following an appointment by President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Prior to this, he served as Minister of Finance and Planning from 2015 to 2021, playing a key role in shaping Tanzania’s economic policies. With a PhD in Economics, Dr. Mpango has also held vital positions such as Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority and worked with global institutions like the World Bank.
As he steps away from public office, Dr. Mpango leaves behind a legacy of economic expertise, dedicated public service, and a heartfelt commitment to Tanzania’s progress, now ready to cultivate a new chapter on the fertile grounds of his family farm.
