Uganda is entering a heated political season ahead of the January 2026 elections, with at least 23 candidates vying for the presidency. Among them is long-serving President Yoweri Museveni, who despite his advanced age, is seeking another term in office. But while Museveni dominates political headlines, it is his loyal ally, Gen (Rtd) Moses Ali, who has unexpectedly become a TikTok sensation.
At 86, General Ali serves as Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament. A veteran politician and retired military officer, his presence at National Resistance Movement (NRM) rallies has attracted mixed reactions. Many Ugandans admire his loyalty and resilience, while others question his suitability to remain in active politics given his visible frailty.
On TikTok, videos of the Deputy PM struggling to sit still or appearing unaware of his surroundings during rallies have gone viral. Often flanked by military aides, his public appearances highlight the stark reality of Uganda’s ageing political class. Despite these concerns, his handlers insist that he still has the energy to serve as Member of Parliament for East Moyo Constituency, a seat he hopes to retain in 2026.
Ali’s political journey spans nearly five decades. He first rose under Idi Amin’s regime in the 1970s, serving as Finance Minister. After Amin’s fall, he led the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) rebel group before signing a peace deal with Museveni. This paved the way for his integration into government, where he has since held several Deputy Prime Minister and ministerial roles.
As Museveni campaigns for what many see as his final term, Moses Ali’s viral moments on TikTok reflect not only his personal legacy but also broader questions about age, succession, and the future of Uganda’s politics.
