Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has led tributes following the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, hailing him as a symbol of resilience, integrity, and unwavering dedication to Africa’s progress.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media platform X, Kenyatta mourned the 82-year-old Nigerian statesman, who died in a London clinic after complications arising from a medical visit in April. He described Buhari as a leader who bore the responsibilities of office with humility and commitment, consistently prioritising the interests of Nigeria and the continent.
“President Buhari was not only a symbol of resilience but also of integrity,” Kenyatta noted. “He had a firm stance on his principles and always prioritised the interests of Nigeria and Africa above self.”
Kenyatta lauded Buhari’s leadership in tackling corruption, strengthening national security, and promoting regional integration. He also recognised Buhari’s advocacy for “African solutions to African problems,” adding that his contributions to the African Union and the cause of Pan-Africanism will be remembered for generations.
During their tenures, the two presidents developed a rapport grounded in mutual respect and shared aspirations for the continent. Kenyatta fondly recalled Buhari’s state visit to Kenya, highlighting candid discussions they had about the future of Africa. “I have lost not just a friend but a fellow patriot in the quest for a united, peaceful, and prosperous Africa,” he said.
Buhari, a former military ruler turned elected leader, served two terms as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023. He earned both praise and criticism for his strict anti-graft stance, security policies, and economic reforms, but often struggled to meet the high expectations of Nigerians who yearned for transformative change.
Kenyatta concluded his message with condolences to Buhari’s family and the Nigerian people. “May Almighty God grant the people of Nigeria peace and comfort during this difficult time, and may the soul of President Muhammadu Buhari rest in eternal peace.”
The passing of Buhari marks the end of an era for one of Africa’s most prominent political figures.
