Patrick Spencer, a Member of Parliament from Britain’s opposition Conservative Party, has been charged with two counts of sexual assault following alleged incidents at a prestigious London venue. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced on Tuesday that the charges relate to events that reportedly took place in August 2023 at the Groucho Club, a well-known private members’ establishment in Soho.
Spencer, 37, was elected to represent the Central Suffolk and North Ipswich constituency in the July 2024 general election. The CPS stated that the charges involve two separate women and follow a detailed review of evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police.
Spencer’s legal team has issued a firm denial of the allegations. “Mr. Spencer categorically denies the charges and will defend the allegations robustly in court,” a spokesperson said in a statement. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, June 16, 2025.
In response to the charges, the Conservative Party has moved swiftly to suspend Spencer from the party. “Patrick Spencer MP has been suspended from the Conservative Party pending the outcome of the legal proceedings,” a party spokesperson confirmed.
The case adds to growing scrutiny over conduct within Westminster, coming just weeks after a Labour MP, Dan Norris, was suspended by the ruling party following his arrest on suspicion of sexual offences against a minor and rape. That investigation remains ongoing.
The Groucho Club, where the alleged assaults occurred, is an exclusive social venue known for its popularity among artists, media professionals, and politicians. The club has not publicly commented on the matter.
Spencer’s suspension means he will now sit as an independent MP while the legal proceedings unfold. His constituency office has not released any further comment.
The CPS emphasized that criminal proceedings are now active and urged the public and media to refrain from speculation that could interfere with the fairness of the trial.
This case will be closely watched as it proceeds through the courts, highlighting the continued focus on accountability and conduct standards for public officials.
