Ukraine and the United States will hold talks in Switzerland to discuss President Donald Trump’s 28-point plan to end the war with Russia, Kyiv confirmed Saturday. The draft proposal, which has sparked concern among European allies, includes controversial measures such as ceding Ukrainian territory, limiting the country’s military, and pledging never to join NATO.
President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a decree naming his top aide, Andriy Yermak, to lead Ukraine’s negotiation team. “Our representatives know how to defend Ukraine’s national interests and what is necessary to prevent Russia from launching a third invasion,” Zelensky said.
Security officials from France, Britain, and Germany will also join the discussions in Geneva, according to sources at the G20 summit in South Africa. Ukraine’s Security Council Secretary, Rustem Umerov, confirmed Switzerland as the location for the talks, describing them as “another stage of dialogue aimed at aligning our vision for the next steps.” Previous negotiations in Turkey yielded only prisoner exchanges and repatriations of bodies.
The US plan has already faced criticism from Kyiv’s European allies. Leaders of France, Germany, Britain, Canada, and Japan said the draft “requires additional work” and expressed concern over proposed limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces, warning that such restrictions could leave the country vulnerable to future attacks. French President Emmanuel Macron described the G20 as struggling to resolve global crises, highlighting the challenges of implementing a unilateral US plan.
Zelensky acknowledged the difficulty of the moment for Ukraine and promised to propose alternatives to Trump’s draft. While the decree states that Russian representatives will also participate, Moscow has not yet confirmed its attendance.
As Ukraine, the US, and European partners prepare for the Geneva talks, the world watches closely. The outcome could reshape the course of the nearly four-year conflict and determine the security and sovereignty of Ukraine for years to come.
