The U.S. Department of State has issued a strong warning to applicants against falling victim to passport renewal scams. In a notice released on Tuesday, the Department cautioned travelers not to use private companies or third-party websites that claim to offer U.S. passport renewal services for a fee.
The advisory emphasized that only the U.S. government is authorized to issue passports. “Planning to renew your passport online? Remember that only the U.S. Department of State issues U.S. passports. Don’t get scammed by third-party sites or pay more just for a private company to fill out or pass us your application,” the Department stated.
Officials noted that fraudulent websites often mimic the appearance of official government platforms, misleading applicants into sharing sensitive personal and financial details. Such actions expose individuals to identity theft, fraud, or potential financial losses.
To protect themselves, applicants were urged to ensure they only use the official government website, which ends in “.gov.” The Department further advised travelers to carefully check web addresses before entering passport numbers, identification details, or credit card information.
“Do not give your personal or payment information to a third-party online passport site. Only the U.S. Department of State issues U.S. passports,” the statement reiterated.
The warning comes as part of broader efforts to enhance public awareness of online scams targeting travelers. The State Department assured citizens of its commitment to providing legitimate, secure passport services while stressing the importance of vigilance when seeking assistance online.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi recently issued a separate advisory to Kenyan travelers. The Embassy reminded visa holders that possession of a U.S. visa does not guarantee entry or determine the length of stay in the country. Officials clarified that overstaying one’s permitted duration is a violation of immigration laws, which may affect future visa eligibility.
“A U.S. visa only allows an individual to travel to an airport or seaport of entry. The expiration date on the visa is not the length of stay in the U.S.,” the Embassy stated.
Both advisories highlight the need for travelers to stay informed, follow official guidance, and remain cautious to avoid immigration complications and online fraud.
