The United States Embassy in Tanzania has issued a security warning to its citizens amid widespread protests coinciding with the country’s general elections on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.
In a statement released by the embassy, American nationals were urged to remain indoors, avoid large gatherings, and exercise caution as security forces respond to the growing demonstrations across multiple towns.
“There are reports of demonstrations in multiple locations. U.S. government personnel are advised to shelter in place,” the statement read.
The embassy further advised foreigners to maintain a low profile, stay alert to local developments, and monitor media updates for new information. Additionally, U.S. citizens were encouraged to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for emergency updates and assistance.
The protests, which have rocked several major cities including Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Mwanza, were sparked by widespread dissatisfaction with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government. The unrest intensified as Suluhu appeared headed for a landslide re-election victory following the detention of opposition leader Tundu Lissu, whose party boycotted the polls citing unfair conditions.
Reports indicate that several major roads have been blocked by protesters, while incidents of violence and vandalism have been reported near polling stations. In some areas, angry demonstrators destroyed ballot boxes in protest of what they described as a rigged electoral process.
Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Alfred Chalamila warned that authorities would take firm action against any attempts to disrupt the voting process.
Adding to the tension, internet monitoring group NetBlocks confirmed a nationwide internet disruption, describing it as a “digital blackout.” Three major internet service providers reportedly shut down access, raising concerns about restricted communication and information flow during the elections.
As the situation remains fluid, the U.S. Embassy has reiterated its call for citizens to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety.
