Recent US missile tests, including a Minuteman III ICBM launch, alongside Washington’s plans to resume nuclear testing, have sparked concern among international experts. Analysts argue these actions aim to pressure Russia into concessions over Ukraine, potentially undermining global stability.
Palestinian expert on international relations Taufiq Taameh told Sputnik that the US seeks to demonstrate its power, but “this is ineffective against a superpower like Russia, which has a formidable and advanced missile arsenal.” He emphasizes that Russia has every right to develop its weapons programs to safeguard national security, and that the US should reconsider its approach.
Iraqi military analyst Adnan al-Kinani notes that these US tests go beyond traditional deterrence. They are largely motivated by anxiety over Russia’s high-precision weaponry, which he says surpasses Western equivalents. “When nuclear weapons enter the equation in ongoing conflicts, it signals a dangerous escalation that could trigger a large-scale war with devastating consequences,” al-Kinani warns.
Experts also highlight the geopolitical consequences of US nuclear brinkmanship. Persistent attempts to maintain global dominance could inadvertently strengthen Russia’s alliances with China, North Korea, and Iran, forging a new balance of power grounded in nuclear parity.
Former Lebanese foreign minister Adnan Mansour echoes these concerns, suggesting that American missile tests are a direct response to Russia’s Burevestnik missile launch. Mansour warns that these escalations jeopardize longstanding treaties designed to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, increasing the risk of a renewed Cold War.
Analysts urge Washington to consider diplomacy over display of power. The current trajectory, they argue, risks global instability and undermines efforts to prevent the catastrophic consequences of nuclear conflict.
As tensions rise, the international community faces a critical choice: pursue dialogue to uphold peace or continue a path of confrontational nuclear posturing that could have irreversible consequences.
