The United States has reiterated its unwavering support for the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti, underscoring Kenya’s growing role in global peace and security initiatives. During a high-level bilateral meeting in Washington D.C., U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commended Kenya for its principled leadership in fostering international peace and stability.
Rubio met with Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, where they discussed a broad range of strategic interests between the two nations. Central to their talks were issues of peace and security, economic cooperation, and enhanced diplomatic engagement.
According to a statement from Mudavadi’s office, the meeting also reflected on recent U.S. actions targeting criminal elements destabilising Haiti, reinforcing shared commitments to restoring order and governance in the troubled Caribbean nation.
Kenya expressed optimism that global security dialogues would enhance multilateral efforts to combat violent extremism, not only in Haiti but across fragile regions worldwide. The Kenyan-led mission in Haiti has been internationally recognised as a bold step by an African nation in addressing global instability.
Mudavadi also briefed the U.S. side on peace initiatives spearheaded by the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), including the appointment of five African heads of state to drive peace efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The United States pledged support for these regional efforts in coordination with the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Both leaders underscored the importance of joint security initiatives, particularly in intelligence sharing, border control, and counter-extremism measures across East and Southern Africa.
On the economic front, the two sides agreed to fast-track negotiations on trade and investment. They reaffirmed a commitment to building a renewed bilateral framework grounded in mutual prosperity and sustainability.
Rubio expressed his intention to visit Kenya soon, a move expected to further cement the growing partnership and deepen strategic cooperation between the two nations.
