Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday emphasized the importance of cooperation between China and the European Union, describing both sides as “big guys” in the international community who must guide their relationship in the right direction. Xi made the remarks during a meeting with President of the European Council Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Beijing, as part of the 25th China-EU Summit.
The meeting comes at a time of increasing global uncertainty, with both sides seeking to manage strategic competition while deepening economic and diplomatic engagement. President Xi stressed that China and the EU, as major global powers and markets, share broad common interests and shoulder significant global responsibilities.
Xi called for mutual respect, deeper economic cooperation, and joint efforts to tackle global challenges such as climate change, supply chain resilience, and peace-building. He also reiterated China’s commitment to reform and opening up, expressing hope that the EU would maintain a fair and open business environment for Chinese enterprises.
European Council President Antonio Costa noted the importance of maintaining dialogue and cooperation with China, particularly in light of shared interests in global stability and sustainable development. Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the need for a balanced relationship built on reciprocity and transparency.
The summit reflects a mutual willingness to navigate complex issues through diplomacy and constructive engagement. As China-EU relations evolve, both sides appear committed to preserving dialogue as a cornerstone of their strategic partnership.
