Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that he and U.S. President Donald Trump have agreed to collaborate on strengthening Ukraine’s air defences, amid growing anxiety in Kyiv about the consistency of military aid from Washington.
The two leaders held what was described as a productive phone call, during which they discussed the urgent need to bolster Ukraine’s ability to protect its skies. Zelenskyy highlighted that both sides acknowledged the importance of air defence cooperation and committed to working together to address the escalating aerial threats from Russia.
The conversation touched on the possibilities of joint defence production, purchases, and strategic investments. This renewed cooperation comes at a critical moment, with Russia intensifying its aerial assaults. According to officials, Trump expressed a desire to help Ukraine acquire the means to better defend itself, particularly in light of Russia’s increased use of drones and missile strikes.
Just a day earlier, Trump had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing disappointment afterward, saying there was no progress toward ending the conflict. He conveyed that the Russian leader showed no interest in halting the war, calling the lack of movement “too bad.”
Hours after that call, Russia launched what was described as the most massive drone attack of the war on Kyiv. The overnight barrage left one person dead, injured more than twenty others, and caused widespread damage across the capital. Over 500 drones and a dozen missiles were launched, sending air raid sirens blaring throughout the night. Ukrainian officials labeled the attack as deliberate and designed to provoke maximum fear and destruction.
On the same day, a major incident occurred at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. All external power lines were temporarily knocked out, forcing the facility to switch to emergency diesel generators. Although power was later restored, the event underscored the ongoing danger posed by continued Russian strikes on critical infrastructure.
Ukraine has repeatedly appealed for advanced air defence systems from the U.S., particularly the Patriot missile system, which it considers vital for countering Russian aerial assaults. Recent disruptions in U.S. weapons deliveries have alarmed Ukrainian officials, who warn that the delays could erode their defensive capabilities on the battlefield. In an effort to fill the gap, Germany has reportedly entered discussions to purchase additional Patriot systems.
Meanwhile, Trump also held discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about Ukraine, focusing on air defence and broader trade concerns. Both leaders reportedly emphasized the need to support Ukraine’s resilience against further Russian attacks.
Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s openness to direct cooperation with the U.S. on defence technologies, especially drones and related systems. He emphasized that such partnerships are essential for ensuring long-term security and sustainability.
He concluded by expressing gratitude for international support, noting that every contribution plays a role in saving lives and preserving Ukraine’s independence. He also reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to a just and lasting peace, stressing the importance of finding a noble resolution to the ongoing war.
