Former Chief Justice David Maraga has strongly condemned the shooting of Boniface Kariuki, a Nairobi hawker who was critically injured during Tuesday’s anti-government protests. Kariuki, who sells masks in the central business district, was shot at close range by a police officer in an incident captured on video and widely circulated online.
The footage shows Kariuki being confronted by two officers before one of them fires at him point-blank. The shocking incident has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for police accountability. According to the Ministry of Health, Kariuki is currently undergoing neurosurgery, with an intensive care unit (ICU) bed prepared for his post-operative care.
Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director General for Health, confirmed that a neurosurgical team is attending to Kariuki. His condition remains critical following the head injury sustained during the chaos that engulfed the protests in Nairobi’s CBD.
The protests were part of a nationwide outcry demanding justice for Albert Ojwang, a teacher and blogger who died under mysterious circumstances in police custody. The demonstrations have been marked by violent confrontations between police and protesters, leading to multiple casualties.
“The shooting of Boniface Kariuki was cold and without a drop of humanity,” said Maraga in a statement seen by The Star. “It reflects a disturbing trend of brutality and impunity by some members of the police service.”
Maraga also cited a report by the Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNCHR) which recorded at least 22 casualties from shootings and violent attacks across the country during the protests.
Despite the violence, the former Chief Justice commended the youth for their bravery and determination in pushing for justice and reform. “We celebrate the relentless pursuit of justice led by the young people of Kenya. Your sacrifices are not in vain,” he said.
He called for a national reset one that restores constitutionalism and the rule of law. “It is time for the country to rebuild with empathy, solidarity, and adherence to justice. The future of this nation lies in the hands of its youth.”
The incident has intensified calls for an independent investigation and accountability from security agencies.
